The Toll System In The Czech Republic
In the Czech Republic, digital vignettes have been applicable for motorways since 2021.
With the new e-vignette system, you no longer need to stop at highway or gas stations to purchase a physical sticker. Instead, when you buy an e-vignette from an authorized toll provider, your vehicle’s license plate will be added to a database. Cameras on the roads will capture your license plate and compare it with the registered digital vignette in the Czech Republic’s database. This means that your vehicle will be automatically recognized and you won’t have to worry about displaying a physical sticker.
Who Needs to Pay Toll?
If you are driving a motor vehicle with at least four wheels and a maximum weight of 3.5 tons, or a motorhome weighing up to 3.5 tons, you need to have an electronic vignette to use most freeways and expressways in the country. However, motorcycles/tricycles and trailers are not obligated to have a vignette. Starting from the year 2021, some vehicle types with CO2 emissions up to 50 g/km are also exempt from the vignette requirement. This includes electric cars, hybrid cars, and hydrogen cars.
It’s important to note that electric cars are exempt from highway vignettes, but foreign cars must still register their license plates on the official website.

In the Czech Republic, there are two main categories of state roads. The highest category is motorways, which are marked by green signs and require an electronic vignette for access. The maximum speed limit on motorways is 130 km/h.
The other category is highways, which include all other state roads. Unlike motorways, highways do not require an e-vignette for access. However, there is an electronic toll for trucks on certain sections of the highways.

FAQs
Do you need to pay for roads in Czech Republic?
Yes, you need to pay tolls in the Czech Republic. Like most European countries, Czech’s type of toll collection system is based on purchasing a vignette. There are four types of vignettes available in the Czech Republic, each with a different duration: 1, 10, 30 and 365 days.
Are there any exceptions in the Czech Republic?
Driving on the Czech Republic’s road network requires a vignette, which is mandatory for vehicles with at least four wheels and a total weight of up to 3.t tons. Motorcycles and tricycles are exempt from this charge. However, some sections of motorways around major cities and unfinished roads are also exempt from charging. The electronic toll collection with an on-board unit is intended for vehicles weighing over 3.5 tons For vehicles with a maximum permissible weight of over 3.5 tons, there is an electronic toll system. This system charges for travel on motorways and 1st category roads. Electric, hydrogen, and hybrid vehicles are exempt from payment of motorway tolls. However, registration is required to drive without a vignette. The exemption also applies to vehicles transporting certain severely disabled citizens, historical vehicles, vehicles equipped with a special warning light, government vehicles, and vehicles used to assist citizens.
Where should I display my vignette for tolls in Czech Republic?
From January 2021, a toll sticker has been abolished in the Czech Republic and replaced by a digital vignette. It is no longer possible to buy a physical sticker that has to be stuck on the car’s windshield. It is currently only available in the form of an electronic vignette, which is linked to the license plate number.
Is it possible to transfer the vignette to another vehicle?
The Czech digital vignette is not transferable from one vehicle to another. If you sell your car, the vignette is automatically transferred to the new owner. Therefore, if you buy a new car, you must purchase a new vignette.
Is vignette required for motorcycles?
Motorcycles and all vehicles with less than four wheels are exempt from toll payment.
