Why do I need a vignette?

img
The toll system varies from country to country, and the vignette is now a common form of payment proof for tolls in most European countries. By paying tolls, you contribute to the maintenance and expansion of road infrastructure, ensuring optimal conditions for your journey. In a way, this Czech-vignette is your digital toll ticket to smooth travel along Czech roads. Even though not all roads are subject to tolls, for most motorways, you need to buy a vignette in advance. The toll payment obligation applies to all vehicles with at least 4 wheels and a weight of up to 3.5 tons.

Your journey starts with a click!

With the digital e-vignette, you do not have to stop at highway or gas stations to purchase an adhesive sticker as was required before 2021. When you purchase an e-vignette from an official toll provider, your vehicle's registration number will be added to a database. Cameras on the roads capture your license plate and check the validity through the database system in the Czech Republic where your digital vignette is registered and will automatically be recognized. You can buy the vignette online in just a few clicks. FAST AND SIMPLE, the way it should be!

Available types of vignettes in the Czech Republic

Starting from January 2021, adhesive vignettes are no longer valid in the Czech Republic. If you drive a motor vehicle with at least four wheels and a maximum weight of 3.5 tons, or a motorhome weighing up to 3.5 tons, you need an electronic vignette to use most freeways and expressways in the country. However, motorcycles/tricycles and trailers are exempt from this obligation. Additionally, starting in 2021, some vehicle types with CO2 emissions up to 50 g/km, are exempt from the vignette requirement, including electric cars, hybrid cars, and hydrogen cars

Note: Electric cars are exempt from highway vignettes, but foreign cars must register their license plates on the official website.

Depending on your journey, you can choose an e-vignette for different periods, ranging from a 1-day vignette to an annual vignette.

Validity periods:

Note: Annual vignette can be bought no earlier than December of the previous year and is valid till 31st of January of the next year. For example, if you buy a digital vignette for Czech on the 1st of January 2024, the vignette is valid for 13 months, till 31.01.25
The Czech Republic digital vignette can be purchased as:

1- day vignette

for short-term visitors or transits.

10-day vignette

is valid for ten consecutive calendar days.

30-day vignette

valid for thirty consecutive days and

1-year vignette

for 1-year validity.

Vignette Control and Penalties

To use the Czech motorways or expressways, you need a valid e-vignette.

Compliance with the toll obligation is monitored manually and by automatic camera systems. Your license plate number will be checked by scanning the license plates and if it is not registered, the Police of the Czech Republic and the Customs Administration of the Czech Republic will be notified. Violations of the toll requirement are punishable by fines, and driving without a valid vignette can also have legal consequences. The amount of the fine can be up to 5000 Czech crowns, which is the equivalent of 200 euros.

Kindly reminder: Before driving on Czech toll roads, ensure your e-vignette is valid. Driving without a vignette can result in penalties. But fear not, with our easy online purchase system, it’s possible to buy your Czech electronic vignette with just a few taps on your phone.
Please note that tolls must be paid by all motor vehicles traveling on highways and expressways. A vignette for trailers and motorcycles is not required. There are a few exceptions such as the D0 highway and certain parts of D1 and D5 which do not require toll payment. If you plan to travel on rural roads, you do not need to purchase a vignette as well.

If you still have specific questions unanswered, you can go through our Frequently Asked Questions section below.

FAQs

Does the Czech Republic require a vignette?

Yes, a vignette is a mandatory for all vehicles with four wheels and vehicles with a maximum permissible gross weight of 3.5 tonnes.

Where to buy a vignette for the Czech Republic?

There are several ways to buy Czech vignettes. You can easily purchase from the online store on our website. Alternatively, you can find vignettes available at sales points, such as gas stations located near the border or along major roads throughout the country.

What is a Czech vignette?

The Czech vignette is a document that is obligatory to pay a toll and allows you to travel motorways and certain expressways in the Czech Republic

Can I change the validity period or my vehicle registration when I already paid for my Czech digital?

Registering a vignette is a quick process. Due to this, changes to the vignette date, registration plate number, and country of registration cannot be made after payment has been made. So, please be sure to check all the information you enter when you place your order. However, if you have made a mistake, we recommend that you contact our Сustomer Service Team as soon as possible. They will be able to provide additional assistance if the vignette has not yet been registered.

How can I pay for my digital vignette for Czechia?

Currently, you can buy an e-vignette via our website and pay for it with a credit card. Secure credit card payment is provided by Stripe, Inc. Our company does not see or maintain any card information.

How do the vignettes work and how are they verified on the Czech roads?

The valid electronic vignette is linked to the vehicle’s license plate. You can not drive through Czechia without a valid vignette. There are cameras installed on highways and expressways that read the number plate and compare it with a database. For this reason, it is extremely important to enter the license plate number correctly when purchasing a vignette, as a difference of even one digit or one letter may result in a fine.

How long do I need to wait for my Czech e-vignette?

Once you have successfully placed the order and paid for the e-vignette, it may take between 5 and 20 minutes for the e-vignette to be issued. In exceptional cases, registration may take longer. We will notify you by e-mail as soon as your vignette has been registered. Only after you have received the PDF vignette by email, you will be able to use toll motorways and roads. Until you receive a confirmation letter, you may not drive on the toll road.

How should I use my Czechia e-vignette?

Once you have paid for your order and your payment has been successfully processed, a confirmation email will be sent to you. After the vignette has been activated and officially registered, it will also be sent to your email address in PDF format. You do not need to print it out and stick it on your windshield, just download the PDF to your mobile device so you can always show it when you need to.

Is the e-vignette Czech Republic transferable from one vehicle to another?

The Czech digital vignette is not transferable from one vehicle to another. If you sell your car, the vignette is automatically transferred to the new owner. Therefore, if you buy a new car, you must purchase a new vignette.
